The Florida Night club was founded in 1959 under the name Dolphin Swimming Club located along Mama Ngina Street Mombasa which was initially referred to as Azania Street before independence. The name was later changed to Florida Night Club in the early 1960's. The change was inspired by the compelling view of the Mombasa Port which comprised of the ocean, palm trees and the ships docking in which reminded the proprietor of Florida in USA. The Night Club entertainment at the time was mainly live music from bands.
